A place to begin

You don’t need
the perfect words.

You may have never talked about what happened. You may have told someone before and still find it difficult to bring up. Or you may be unsure how to describe an experience from childhood.

You can begin with what is happening in your life now: a relationship you want to understand, a feeling you cannot quite name, or something you are tired of carrying on your own.

“There is something from my childhood I want help with. I’m not ready to explain all of it yet.”

That can be a starting point. Reaching out does not require a detailed account in an email or appointment request.

What brings you here

Room for what
matters to you.

Our conversations can include the concerns you want to address, without assuming that every difficulty comes from the same experience.

  • Trust, closeness, and boundaries in relationships.
  • Shame, self-blame, or difficulty speaking about the past.
  • Anxiety, emotional shutdown, or feeling disconnected.
  • Alcohol, substance use, or sexual behavior you want to understand and change.
  • Identity, self-worth, and what you want your life to look like now.

You do not need to identify with every item. We can discuss whether individual therapy here is a suitable fit for your needs.

Working with Michael

Honest conversation.
A shared direction.

I’m Michael Lockwood, a licensed clinical social worker. Helping men is central to my practice. My approach is direct, collaborative, and solutions-focused.

We look at the experiences and patterns that matter to you, then work toward practical changes beyond the session. There is room for difficult conversations and for a pace that respects what you are ready to explore.

The first conversation is also a chance to ask questions about my approach, privacy and its limits, and whether this is the right setting for the support you need. We can discuss other care options if your needs fall outside the scope of this practice.

A request starts the conversation.

Questions before reaching out

Do I have to tell the whole story right away?

You can say that you want help with something from childhood without putting the details in your initial request. In a conversation, we can discuss what you are ready to explore and what information is needed to understand your care needs.

What if I’m unsure what to call what happened?

You can bring that uncertainty into the conversation. You do not have to arrive with a diagnosis or a polished explanation to ask about support.

Can we focus on my relationships or daily life?

Yes. Relationship concerns, boundaries, anxiety, identity, and the patterns you want to change can be part of individual therapy. We can discuss your priorities together.

Where can I find support before an appointment?

RAINN offers sexual assault support. You can also explore SCENE’s resources. The appointment portal and practice email are not emergency services.
